Washington Ensemble Theatre is holding auditions for our Spring 2023 production of Our Dear Dead Drug Lord by Alexis Scheer, directed by Franco.

About – Washington Ensemble Theatre

Synopsis:

Set in the face of the 2008 presidential election in Miami, a coven of teenage girls meet in an abandoned treehouse to summon the ghost of Pablo Escobar. Are they actually summoning the leader of the Medellín Cartel? Or are they just playing tricks on one another? This roller coaster ride through the trials and terrors of girlhood dabbles in dark magic and the uncertainty of growing up.

Character Descriptions:

Pipe – just turned 18, Cuban – American

President of the Dead Leaders Club, brilliant, sophisticated, passionate. Makes the rules. Will run a fortune 500 company one day.

Zoom – 15, Jewish-American

Pipe’s next door neighbor, impulsive, hilarious, excitable. Will go through many phases of “finding herself”. Tries hard to appear more daring than she actually is but fails often. Feeds off of receiving attention.

Squeeze – 16, Puerto Rican on mom’s side, Haitian on dad’s side

Pipe’s best friend, practical, grounded, creative. allergic to cats. Will run for Congress the second she is old enough.

Kit – 17, Colombian – American

New girl in town. sensual, mysterious, restrained. The kind of impossibly-cool that is both intimidating and seductive. Not so much thinking about the future, only how to get by in the moment.

Director Bio:

Franco (they/them) is a Peruvian-American storyteller & interrupter of the status quo working in Seattle. Franco has worked professionally as an actor, director, playwright, dancer, bilingual text coach, and teaching artist, in addition to being Sunshine Chairman and a Resident Actor at Washington Ensemble Theatre. Companies Franco has worked with include: The Oregon Shakespeare Festival, 5th Avenue Theatre, Village Theatre, Seattle Shakespeare Company, Seattle Public Theatre, Book-It Repertory Theatre, upstart crow collective, On the Boards, Horse in Motion, Umbrella Project, Burien Actor’s Theatre, and Annex Theater.

Production Schedule:

First Rehearsal: March 20th, 2023

Rehearsals: March 20th-April 19th, 2023

Tech Begins: April 20th, 2023 at 12th Avenue Arts

First Preview: April 27th, 2023 at 12th Avenue Arts

Opening Night: April 28th, 2023 at 12th Avenue Arts

Closing: May 15th, 2023

*Rehearsals are usually Monday – Friday 6:00 pm – 10:00 pm. This might change based on the needs of the room.

Stipend:

This position will be paid a $400 honorarium stipend. We also acknowledge this is a portion of what we wish we could pay and consider this a small token of appreciation.

Covid Requirements:

Everyone working on this show, and at Washington Ensemble Theatre, is required to be vaccinated and provide proof of vaccination upon hiring.

What to Prepare:

For the submission, we would love for you to share some prepared material with us. This can be a monologue, an excerpt from your favorite book, a poem, a song, a combination of these things– anything that makes you feel like you are sharing your best self with us. Feel free to prepare as little or as much as your heart desires. We would like to see between 1 and 3 minutes of material.
